Our History

Wortley Road Public School, opened on May 29, 1893, is London’s oldest surviving school on its original site. There were 46 kindergarten children in one room and 41 grade 1 students in the other. Two extra rooms were added in 1896; and at the same time, the school received its first principal in residence. In 1908, four rooms were added. In 1922, six new rooms had to be added to keep pace with the growing population. Finally, in 1964, the older parts of the school, built in 1893 and 1896, were torn down, and some construction resulted in a gym, library learning commons, makerspace, administrative offices, and classrooms being added on to the building.

Ninety Nine Years of Wortley Road School by Mr. J. McFerran, gives a history of the school. This book is located in our Learning Commons.
